When Sequoyah presented his syllabary to the tribe in 1821, he and his daughter were immediately charged with witchcraft. An 1811 Cherokee law gave them a civil trial before execution. Some Cherokee hid in these very mountains to avoid the Trail of Tears. They are the reason the Eastern Band exists today — rebels who refused removal and became the people of the Qualla Boundary. The mountains themselves were the act of resistance.
