When thinking about Mustang Island, one can't help but think of Tom Robbins' 1976 novel, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. In which, endangered whooping cranes are central to the plot as a flock of them is held hostage at the Rubber Rose Ranch by a group of militant cowgirls. Robbins opined in the book, "disbelief in magic can force a poor soul into believing in government and business..."

IRL, the island gets its name from the hundreds of wild mustangs (mestenos) brought by Spaniards that roamed the area in the 1800s before they were displaced by ranching. The Texas Coastal Bend is the only place in the world where you can see the last naturally occurring population of endangered whooping cranes and hundreds of these majestic birds migrate from Canada to the region every winter.

While whooping cranes primarily winter at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, the neighboring areas of Mustang Island and Port Aransas are the central hubs for viewing them. Which you already know, because the last time you were there you dropped your binoculars into the water and had to buy new ones at the Conspiratorium Sportsman's Boutique.
