FeBe’s leather bar in South of Market (SOMA) opened in 1966 at 1501 Folsom Street. SOMA’s gay male community grew in the 1960s, during a period of legal wrangling over redevelopment. Gay residents took advantage of cheap rents and vacant buildings, establishing the city’s first leather community.
