Compound was one of Denver’s longest-running gay bars, operating at 145 Broadway for more than 25 years before closing in 2018. The Yelp listing notes it was established in 1986 and located in what was originally the Gay Inn.
It ran 7am to 2am, seven days a week, 365 days a year — which became part of its legend. Weekday morning crowds were often hospital night-shift workers taking advantage of the early opening and a 7am happy hour, while the nighttime brought dancers who’d shut the place down. The front room had bold purple walls and black plastic-tiled floors, with a small bar, pool tables, darts, and tall vinyl booths.
Past a cavernous opening was a giant wooden dance floor with a DJ booth perched high above it — Friday nights packed it wall-to-wall, with lines forming around the building. Just off the dance floor was a heated smoking patio for year-round use.
It drew a mostly male, cruise-y crowd of all ages and styles, from collegiate to leather-and-Levi’s types, and was especially popular on Sunday afternoons for $5 beer busts.
When it closed, the building sold for just over $3 million and became a Postino WineCafé. The building itself, for context, dates to 1895 and was once a bakery before a long string of bars took over.
