The Triangle was the brainchild of Denver native and Vietnam veteran Donald Walter Young — a Marine sergeant and decorated tank commander. After leaving the service, he returned to Denver and got into the gay-bar business, starting by renting back rooms in two existing downtown bars before building toward his own space. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn early 1973, Young bought a fifty-year-old brick building at 2036 Broadway and transformed it into the Triangle Lounge — though that summer, a fire of suspicious origin damaged the property.  It catered to the leather and denim community, and in those repressive times, gay bars often had discreetly marked alley entrances so patrons could come and go without being seen. Young’s niche was the hyper-masculine leather and Levi’s crowd. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe building itself sits on the corner of N. Broadway and Stout Street in a unique triangle shape that aligns with the block. The original Triangle ran for decades before closing in the early 2000s, and when a new owner reopened it in 2017, the exterior brick walls were literally all that remained of the original structure.
