The address was the name, which gives it a great matter-of-fact defiance — no hiding in metaphor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was a fixture of the ’70s and ‘80s Broadway corridor at a time when that stretch was genuinely the beating heart of Denver’s queer social life. People went dancing at the Broadway and the 1942, and the Triangle served the leather and denim crowd nearby — together they formed a kind of constellation of gay Denver along that strip. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe broader context matters enormously here. Denver’s first gay bar, The Pit, opened in 1939, and bars functioned as safe havens — but also precarious ones. As one historian put it, they were “kind of seedy places, not particularly fun.” People behaved carefully when police were present, and it was a “fairly oppressive circumstance” — there were almost no other ways for LGBT people to gather. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs historian Tom Noel wrote in 1978, “within this rapidly changing bar world, probably 100 Denver bars have been predominantly gay at one time or another,” and their striking instability was itself evidence of the social pressures placed on the community.  The 1942 surviving into the ’80s was a real achievement in that context.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA poster of the 1942 and a photograph of its exterior are preserved in the Denver Public Library’s archives , alongside a 1997 World AIDS Day proclamation — a poignant pairing that captures exactly what that generation of bars meant and what it The gay publication Homo Xtra (later known as HX) once described the Spike as “a good place to discuss opera with people dressed as generals.”  The Spike was one of the prominent leather bars of the era, competing alongside other legendary venues like The Eagle and The Mineshaft in the NYC gay leather scene.  It was eventually closed to make way for the gentrification of far west Chelsea.  The neighborhood transformed dramatically in the early 2000s with the development of the High Line and surrounding areas. It was representative of Capitol Hill at that time: there were gays and drag queens, Blacks and whites, lawyers and ex-cons, punks and hippies — a melting pot of all melting pots, in a bar owned by a Korean immigrant. \n\nThe clientele reflected the vibe: you wouldn’t find buttoned-down businessmen, club bunnies or frat boys, but regular, neighborly folks enjoying the friendly staff, cheap drinks and a jukebox set at just the right volume — loud enough to hear the music, but soft enough to enjoy a conversation. \n\nBarricuda’s closed in November 2019, and Jin Lee passed away in April 2023 after a short battle with lung cancer. No cover charge, male revue six nights a week, happy hour daily — it extended a warm welcome to everyone. \n\nBetween First and Second avenues on Broadway, this used to be Denver’s gayest block. Boyztown was the last holdout. It closed in late 2024 with no formal announcement — just a sign on the door and a “permanently closed” note on Facebook. \n\nOne commenter in the Westword piece captured it perfectly: “This was my
